BNP Paribas and Google Cloud are expanding their collaboration through a five-year agreement focused on artificial intelligence, cloud infrastructure and the development of agentic AI in banking. The agreement will expand BNP Paribas’ access to Google Cloud’s AI-optimised infrastructure, Gemini models and Gemini Enterprise as the bank continues to develop generative AI applications across its operations.

The initial focus is on BNP Paribas’ Corporate and Institutional Banking (CIB) business. The bank plans to integrate Google Cloud’s Gemini models into LLM@CIB, its internal generative AI assistant, which is expected to be available to more than 65,000 employees.

The companies also plan to deploy AI agents across specific banking workflows. One of the initial use cases will involve corporate credit memo preparation, while further applications are planned across sales, trading, research and structuring. These initiatives are intended to expand the practical use of agentic AI in banking beyond standalone AI assistance toward defined operational processes.

BNP Paribas Plans AI Agents for Targeted Banking Workflows

The planned applications will operate within BNP Paribas’ existing security and data governance framework. The bank is maintaining its multi-cloud approach while expanding access to Google Cloud technologies and AI capabilities.

The companies said individual AI agents will be authenticated and restricted to the resources required for their assigned activities. Interactions between agents and systems will also be monitored and controlled, providing an additional layer of governance for the deployment of agentic AI in banking.

The initial applications are focused on structured business processes where AI agents can support employees with specific tasks. Corporate credit memo preparation is among the first planned uses, with additional applications expected across CIB functions including sales, trading, research and structuring.

BNP Paribas has also already deployed Google Cloud’s Gemini technology at Nickel, its digital banking business. Gemini serves as the foundation for Nickel Assist, which helps approximately 200 customer advisers respond to customer requests.

The developments at Nickel and the planned CIB deployments form part of BNP Paribas’ wider AI adoption programme, which includes employee training and the development of internal AI capabilities.

Five-Year Google Cloud Agreement Broadens AI Infrastructure Access

Under the five-year agreement, BNP Paribas will gain broader access to Google Cloud’s AI-optimised infrastructure, Gemini models and Gemini Enterprise. The expanded technology access is intended to support the bank as it develops additional AI applications across its business.

The agreement also creates a wider platform for agentic AI in banking, with the initial CIB applications providing a foundation for further use cases. Rather than applying AI broadly across unrestricted systems, the planned approach focuses on defined workflows with controlled access to the resources required for each task.

The integration of Gemini models into LLM@CIB is expected to extend AI access across a substantial employee base, while the planned AI agents are designed to support specific business processes. This approach places security, authentication, monitoring and data governance alongside the development of agentic AI in banking.

With Gemini already being used at Nickel and further deployments planned for CIB, BNP Paribas is expanding its use of AI across customer service and institutional banking operations. The collaboration with Google Cloud provides infrastructure and AI model access for these initiatives as the bank develops its broader agentic AI in banking strategy.
